Pride and Prejudice variation.
What if Elizabeth Bennet had agreed to Darcy's marriage proposal offered to her at Hunsford parsonage, sincerely thinking it was the best thing she could have done in her situation? As his fiancée and later wife, can she fall in love with Fitzwiliam Darcy who is still very much arrogant, rude, and not reformed man? Will she be able to look over her own prejudice and apprehension, and see a worthy man who loves, and desires her?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I thank you, Mr. Darcy. I do accept.” It came out so quietly that it was barely heard, even to herself. She averted her eyes from him, resting them stubbornly on the ornament of the mantelpiece.
She thought the silence between them lasted an eternity. Perhaps she should not have agreed so quickly, she thought in panic. She should have asked him for a day or two to think about his proposal. Her body stiffened involuntarily when she sensed him stepping closer. Her heart stopped when she felt his hot breath against her temple.
“There is no need to be shy with me, Elizabeth.” He tilted her chin making her look at him.
His eyes were kind and his voice gentle, but she barely registered that. All she wanted was to be left alone now. She desperately craved a moment alone to think everything through.
Her eyes widened in shock when he began leaning further towards her, his gaze focused on her lips. He wanted to kiss her! At the last moment, she turned her face from him, offering him instead her cheek.
“Forgive me,” she heard, and he stepped back from her.
“I will go to Longbourn first thing in the morning to ask your father’s permission.” His voice sounded more formal now. “Perhaps you would wish to write a letter to your father, explaining the situation.”
“I… yes.”
He walked to her again. “Could you meet me early tomorrow in the grove, before my departure? Will seven o’clock not be too early?”
“No, I am used to rising early.” She felt his gaze on her, but she refused to return it. He stood by her side for some time before walking in the direction of the door.
At length, Elizabeth looked up at Mr. Darcy, standing by the door, but not reaching for the doorknob, as if he could not decide whether to go or stay. He was looking at her, and Elizabeth forced herself to smile at him. It was barely a shadow of a smile, which did not even reach her eyes; but Mr. Darcy had to take it for incentive, as he smiled back at her, widely, which completely changed his whole countenance. Before she knew it, he was beside her again, pulling her into his embrace.
One of his hands was placed firmly around her waist, the other cradled her cheek. “I would wish to stay here with you longer, but I have to go. My aunt may have noticed my absence and guessed I am with you. It will be better for us not to mention about our understanding to her for now. You may tell Mrs. Collins of our engagement; she seems to be a sensible woman who can be trusted.”
“Yes, she is,” Elizabeth whispered, her eyes stubbornly focused on his elaborately tied neck cloth, wishing him to simply go and leave her alone.
“What is the matter, Lizzy?” Elizabeth’s eyes lifted up to him in surprise, her eyelashes fluttering. Had Mr. Darcy just called her Lizzy?
“You look so very shocked,” he chuckled, his whole face beaming at her. “I know that you did not expect my proposal. I understand you are still in awe and cannot believe your own good fortune.”
“Where is my impertinent little lady?” he asked laughingly, and when she did not answer, still staring at him as if spellbound, he sighed, shaking his head with a smile, and pressed her very tightly to himself.
Elizabeth froze, feeling for the first time in her life, a hard male body next to hers. She had always known that he was tall, but in such close contact, she was more aware of how he was so very large.

Apprehension and Desire edition by Ola Wegner Literature Fiction eBooks

After reading several negative reviews, I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. I thoroughly enjoyed this variation to the point that the typographical and grammatical errors, which were numerous, did not distract me from the storyline. This is written for a twenty-first century audience, so if modern language (as well as behavior) bothers you in a P&P variation, skip this one.

Points of contention:

1- Not really a spoiler, as it happens quite early: Darcy masturbating. Could have gone my entire life without that and been happier for it.
2- Elizabeth. She does not stay true to her P&P character. Darcy is a closer match though.
3- Abrupt ending. I thought there were some interesting bits happening on the last page, and then come to find out it's the last page! (This is excepting the epilogue.)
4- Continuity. For example: In one scene, Elizabeth tells Darcy that she is on her way to see Georgiana in the music room, but she never goes there and never says anything to the poor girl. Georgiana might still be waiting at the pianoforte.

Yes, yes, yes - As with every self-published variation I have read, this one is in desperate need of a copy editor. Considering that the author is not a native English speaker, I actually thought she did a better job than many of the authors for whom it is their first language.

The Pros:

1- I really like what the author did with the character of Mrs. Bennet - quite insightful.
2- Although light on plot, the storyline kept my interest. I enjoyed reading how Elizabeth came to fall in love with Darcy.
3- Unlike many variations, the pride and prejudice were retained; and the characters had to overcome them.
4- There were several plot points that I liked a great deal, but I will not spoil them here.

Now about the sex: GRA-PHIC! Graphic! Some of the intimacy was beyond what my husband and I share, and we've been married for 17 years! But except for the afore-mentioned masturbation bit, it did not bother me.

Apprehension and Desire edition by Ola Wegner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Apprehension and Desire starts with Elizabeth and Maria journeying to Kent to visit with Charlotte. On their way there they see a former friend from the neighbourhood reduced to the role of governess due to her father's death and entail of the estate. This sobering picture of Elizabeth's possible future spurs her to accept the proposal from a very ardent Darcy.

The rest of the story features an unsure Elizabeth, passionate Darcy, sympathetic Mrs. Bennet and a jealous Mr. Bennet. There are many misunderstandings to be had, as well as many reconciliations. It is a more graphic novel when it comes to the amorous scenes, so I wouldn't recommend it for a purist, or someone who likes a clean read. It didn't bother me, though, and my rating is not effected by it.

I did find that there were some typographical errors and a few spots where there were alternate words, such as he/him, and a few spots where I wasn't sure of the passage of time, or references to events that happened "off scene" but were only casually mentioned. It caused me a few times to go back to see if I missed something. With another read over with an editor those would be caught.

I was very excited to read this novel, my second of Wegner's, and I was not disappointed!
I love reading P&P variations this one was really interesting in the sense that it brought our two characters together in a different way. I like it just because I like my stories where the couple are together early on with some obstacles verses separation with misunderstandings or other people who try to come between the couple. The story gave you the way things were thought of in that time where woman don't have the rights they do now so I thought it was believable. I've read reviews that criticized the way she made Darcy and Elizabeth's character saying it wasn't written as Jane Austin intended. I think we can all agree that when we buy any variety it will be different that's what makes it a variation. I realize to some it ruins it but I like these different plots and angles. To me it lets you relive the story with the characters we all love it doesn't disturb me if people don't talk the way they did for the time period I wasn't there so I guess I don't focus on that.Don't misunderstand me I don't appreciate the books I've seen that are about vampires P&P. There is a line there I love the love story between Darcy and Elizabeth. This book as I said wasn't bad but I did feel that the ending was too rushed. Also I agree with another review that said the other characters in the book were neglected and left incomplete. It is still a worthwhile read. Nothing is ever perfect but this one isn't far from it.
This is the second Ola Wegner book I've read and I can say never again. I honestly do not understand why Ms. Wegner writes P&P fan fiction when it seems obvious to me that she hates Darcy and Elizabeth. Why else would she write a book in which Darcy is an oafish egotistical cad who thinks only about himself and Elizabeth is a weak willed ninnyhammer who has none of the spunk and spark from the original. I truly despised the characterizations of two of my favorite Austen heroes.

SPOILER ALERT The final straw for me came when Darcy pretty much admitted to Elizabeth that he only acted kind and considerate because he wanted her and then said that her only concern should be him and him alone. And Elizabeth, after a weak and an ineffectual threat rolled over and meekly submitted. Darcy doesn't want a wife who challenges him...he wants a possession.

All these positive reviews stun me because there are no redeeming factors for either character. The only one who ended up having a backbone was Jane.
